[Original caption] This is a road in the thickly-populated native quarter of Black Town, west of the Esplanade. Here under the broad-fronded palms, the bhisti [water carrier] goes along carrying water in gourds slung from a yoke around his shoulders, the bright dresses of native servants and children make gay spots of color against the red sand of the road and all the busy life of an Indian city goes on under the low--roofed houses palm-sheltered from the sun.
