One can see the rapid transformation of the postcard from a time when messages where only allowed on the front, as in this card. After about January 1902 (the law was not always enforced, especially in British India) the British Post Office allowed for messages on half of the back of a postcard, reserving the other half for stamp and address. This allowed for much bigger images on the front, as in the same view of A Knife Grinder made soon thereafter by Clifton & Co.
