"The Eden Gardens, for which Calcutta is indebted to the sisters of Lord Auckland (hence the Indian name, Lady Bagan), are beautifully laid out, and many years ago were the principal evening gathering-place of Calcutta society. In them is the ground of the Calcutta Cricket Club, used for the All-India Lawn Tennis Tournament, and on the side of the miniature lake (the land around which has been allotted to the Rowing Club), is a picturesque Burmese Pagoda brought from Prome, and set up here in 1856."
