The Taj Hotel was built to realize Jamsetji N. Tata's dream of a fine hotel to reflect the ascendancy of Bombay's own mercantile class. The Taj Hotel was completed on December 16, 1903. It was one of the most popular postcard subjects of Bombay, and the hotel itself published a lot of these images which would have been for sale to travelers on its own premises. Some of these cards, like this early view printed by the Bombay Lithographic Company were exquisite objects in their own right.

Sent to Mrs. Max Pause, 72 University Place, New York, NY: "Bombay, India. 4-22-13. Dear Mrs. P. – This is the finest place in India. Very beautiful building and I have such a fine view of the harbor from my room. Cairo-Egypt next. Best wishes. May Lee."
