Mumbai grew from the 1860s through the 1890s largely because of the international cotton trade, which went from exporting cotton to textile manufacturing mills dotting the city. The wealth generated by the cotton trade helped finance buildings of the unique "Gothic Indo-Sarcenic" style that predominate in South Bombay like Elphinstone College, Victoria Terminus and Municipal Hall.
