According to the Gazetteer of Simla District (1904), these offices were built in 1900-01 and first used by the Punjab Government in 1902. They would have been the height of modernity around the time the postcard was published. Particularly effective is not only the angle, but the blue tint on the brick that sets off the faux sunset, the diagonal green-tinted wooden barrier that leads the eye to the building's entrance, the arced shadow in the foreground, the smattering of clouds in the sky – a lot of artistic care lavished on a postcard.
