Bombay’s modern municipal headquarters was planned after the municipal corporation’s formation (1865), with the foundation stone for the new building laid in 1884. The building was completed in 1893 to designs by architect F. W. Stevens in a Venetian Gothic/Indo‑Saracenic blend. The building’s grand interior “Corporation Hall” served as the ceremonial meeting space for the elected corporation and is still associated with the city’s civic government.
