[Original caption] Madras, Government House. Government House looks out upon the Coom river at the back, and its front gives upon Mount Road, the principal street in Madras. It has a noble banqueting hall constructed during Lord Clive's Government to commemorate the fall of Seringapatam, and possesses some very fine portraits of royalties and vice-royalties. [end]

This building, hardly changed, is now the Madras Club and the small lake in front is a a circular ring for members to walk in the evenings.
