Every city had its female dancers, or "nautch women" and they were often showed with the musicians who played, assisted and sometimes protected and managed them as well. This however seems like a somewhat grim group, and whether it is their unhappiness at their state, or at being photographed, or just a momentary dismal glance is hard to discern a century later.
