Postcards like this illustrate how enormous the trade through the Khyber Pass once was. The Peshawar District Gazetteer 1897-98 put the value of the unregistered gold trade alone between Peshawar and Bokhara in Central Asia at Rs. 12,00,000 per year, “all of which flowed to Bombay,” (Punjab Government, reprint, Lahore: Sang-e-meel Publications, 1989, p. 236).
