[Original caption] General View, Agra Fort. Most of the magnificent buildings which render Agra so interesting are located within the fort which has a circuit of over a mile. The walls are of red sandstone and are nearly 70 feet high, while the ditch is 30 feet wide and 35 feet deep. At the time of the Mutiny in 1857 the Fort was held by one British Regiment and some Artillery. It sheltered 6,000 men, women, and children., including 1,000 natives. The rebels advanced on Agra on October 6th but were completely routed on October 10th, relieving Agra of all danger. [end]
