Sujaan Mukherjee writes of Frank Clinger Scallan's postcards of Calcutta: "The artist may or may not have used photographs as reference, but unlike most photographs that depict churches, public buildings or trams, these drawings recall a city that is bustling with people. Indians and Europeans seem to share space on his vibrant canvases without indication of social hierarchy." This description fits Scallan's view of the "Wall Street of the East," as Clive Street was referred to then. This is very similar to photographic views, but the addition of color and people in the foreground, hard to capture moving in those days with a long-exposure cameras, give this postcard additional energy.
