Water Bullock

Water Bullock

c. 1903
13.90x
9.00cm

Bullocks that ferried water were called "water bullocks." This colored image by Clifton & Company, one of the earliest mass publishers of postcards in Mumbai (Bombay) was fairly popular, perhaps because of its rich colors. Note how the bhistee, or water carrier, has his own leather pouch with water that is re-filled by the larger one on the bullock.

Postmarked Bombay, February 8, 1908 and sent to Mrs. Clarence Kenyou, 13th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
