Saringee [Sarangi] or Violin

Saringee [Sarangi] or Violin

From a beautiful series of artist postcards that may recall elements of "Company Painting" in their direct representations of human form on simply (albeit coloured) backgrounds. While the artists and publisher of these postcards are most likely to have been Indian, the title equating the sarangi to the violin shows that the postcard was intended for foreign buyers as well. The sarangi is said to be named after the bow of Lord Vishnu, although there are also Persian etymological origins (seh or three, and rangi or colour) for an instrument whose versatility is said to best represent the human voice.
