The Residency is where the British representative to the Maharajah of Kashmir's court lived. Srinagar lies on both banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus River. Kashmir remained an independent feudal state during the Raj, with the British Resident exercising a certain amount of indirect authority over State affairs. This was one of Mirza's most successful postcards, with a faux sunset set off by the building and poplar trees, while the pink highlights dance on the flowers and people loaf about on the verandah.
