While an exchange of written messages has been part of history for a long time, the concept of a regular postal service seems to have arisen in Europe during the 15th century when French students were requesting so many goods, a regular service was instituted to meet their needs. In the 17th century, a regular postal service was instituted in the British Isles. Towards the end of the 18th century, the East India Company created a postal service in India, which was regularized in the 19th century and soon became one of the Raj's largest employers.
