Thome, now part of Madras City, was named after the Portugese pioneers, after St. Thomas the Apostle, who is said to have evangelized the country. A series of memorials of these pioneers will be found in the Cathedral which stands over the tomb of the Apostle; martyred here on the 21st of December, A.D. 68. [end]
