Madras Girl with fruit

Madras Girl with fruit

c. 1910

The successful colorization of what was originally a black and white photograph is exemplary. The fruit is nearly tangible, and matches the sari, the purple grapes are echoed on her bangles, the background is suitably subdued, the red and white of her jewelry makes it stand out, and the skin tones offer a base of realism. Long before color photography, print artists were well able to bring images to life with a parade of hues.
