Kasauli is a hillstation in Himachal Pradesh, established in 1842, less than 80 km from Simla. Murray's Handbook for India, Ceylon and Burma

The gold frame and embossing were part of changing postcard fashions. Looking carefully one can recognize two hallmarks of hillstation development – a complex with a larger main house and smaller support structures in the foreground, and a denuded hill with a bungalow on the top in the background. The cutting and maintenance of trees for construction and firewood were one the sustainability challenges hillstation municipalities faced.
