The Third Afghan War between May and August 1919 followed the end of World War I. Although the Afghan ruler had remained neutral during the conflict, lingering tensions and distrust led to battles fought not far from here and the first real use of air power in a Frontier conflict by the British. Mobilization of numerous battalions of the British Indian army led to shows of force amplified by postcards like this; the war ended in a stalemate.
