J.D. Gondhalekar (1909-1981) produced a series of at least ten postcards called "Indian Topics" around 1942, among the few Indian-artist signed postcard series from colonial times. The postcards were created using wood engravings, a rare medium for postcards (more widely used in Japan). Gondhalekar himself had wide-ranging interests and an eminent career: he served as Dean of Sir J.J. School of Art from 1953 to 1957, then worked as Art Director for The Times of India from 1959 to 1964, played the flute and in the 1940s was also a film director.
