Postcards were an important advertising tool for hotels from the mid-1890s, when Alpine hotels in Austria, Germany and Switzerland helped to popularize the medium. This card from the hillstation of Mussoorie is actually dated on the back 9/6/17, and includes the menu for that day, which is entirely European and in French: Creme a l'Argenteuil, Mayonnaise de Poisson de Riviere, Tournedos au Madere, Selle de Mouton Kotie Garni Duchesse, Legumes du Jour, Pintade Rotie au Jambon, Fruits Glaces Savoy, Tartelletes au Perigord, Dessert, Cafe (rough English translation: Argenteuil cream, River Fish Mayonnaise, Madeira Tournedos, Sheep Saddle Kotie Garni Duchess, Vegetables of the Day, Roasted Guinea Fowl with Ham, Savoy Ice Creams, Perigord Tartlets, Dessert, Coffee).
