World War I Indian merchant sailors on ships sunk by the German ship S.M.S. Mowe in 1915-1916. Postcards from Germany celebrated victories; note the early version of what seems to be a Pakistan flag, probably a Turkish-related icon designating the fact that most of the sailors were Muslim (the Pakistan flag was not developed until two decades later).
