[Original caption] Shankar receives the river Ganga on his head in compliance with the prayers of Bhageeratha. [end]

This image is from a famous painting by Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906), one of India's most important painters. He established the Ravi Varma Press in the 1890s with the help of German lithographers. They ultimately bought him out but licensed his images to print on postcards like this one. Gangavataran refers to Ganga's descent to the earth from heaven.
