Yerwada jail was originally built outside the city limits of Pune in 1871 by the British, but over time, as Pune expanded, Yerwada became integrated into the city, making the prison more centrally located within the urban area. The prison complex is spread over a vast area of 512 acres and is one of the largest prisons in South Asia. Many political prisoners were held here during British times, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sarojini Naidu and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
