Waldemar Haffkine, a Russian Jewish doctor in Mumbai developed one of the first vaccinations after he arrived in 1896 from the Pasteur Institute in Paris where he helped with the discovery of early cholera vaccinations. By 1897 he was running trials for a serum that inoculated millions in India. Made from resistant animals, it worked about half the time and made him a controversial hero and vaccine pioneer.
