The word "Dhangar" owes its origin to the Sanskrit word "Dhenu" (cow), and apparently refers to a caste of people associated with herding primarily in Maharashtra, but also throughout India. Art Union at "37, Bachu Chatterjee's Street, Calcutta" was a leading publisher in the city, where this subject probably found himself facing the camera one day. They are said to be one of the oldest communities in the subcontinent.
