A really special postcard, a view of rural life usually invisible on to these casual slips of paper. There are men and women in this picture, although it was usually women who went to fetch water from the beating heart of village life in many parts of the subcontinent. Note the traces of water leaking from the variety of pots arrayed on the platform. A little girl expertly holds a pot up with one hand while eating something with the other. All the dozen or more people whose trip to the well has intersected with the photographer's are looking straight at the camera, unaffected.
