The Indian Postman

One of the finest of Dhurandhar's postcards, which satirizes and draws attention to the novelty of the postcard – that anyone could read it, including and especially the postman. Behind him, in the distance are the big red British postbox that was also prevalent in India, and the postal cart that transported the precious, often personal, messages open to the world.

It should however be pointed out that while the Indian postman may well have – and still does – snoop, in many cases the postman is also the person who has to read the message to the person receiving it, who may be illiterate.
