A sanyasi, also spelled sannyasi, refers to a Hindu ascetic or religious renunciant who has given up worldly possessions and attachments to pursue spiritual goals. The word sanyasi has its roots in Sanskrit. It comes from the term "saṃnyāsa," which is a composite of three parts: "saṃ" meaning "together" or "all," "ni" meaning "down," "āsa" from the root "as" meaning "to throw" or "to put." The literal translation of saṃnyāsa is "to put down everything, all of it" or "abandoning everything."
