The London based publisher F. Hartmann, best known as an indigo merchant, also claimed to be the first British-based publisher of postcards of India as early as 1903. These were halftones, in contrast to the collotypes preferred by German and French publishers at the time. Although postcards of Darjeeling date back to 1897-1898, this would have been one of the earlier cards of the hillstation.
