Kolkata is the financial, business and commercial nerve-center of eastern India and capital of West Bengal, and was the first and longest capital of the British Raj in India. On the left is a portion of Government House.
The range of offices in the background is what was known as the Treasury, along with other agencies in the same complex. The Writers’ Building itself is on Dalhousie Square, just north of here. E.J. Martin was the architect of the Writer's Building as well, thus the similarity in looks. The roadway is Government Place North. This view is looking to the southwest. The Treasury replaced the well-known Spence’s Hotel, which was relocated nearby. Past the Treasury, unseen, are the Town Hall, the Calcutta High Court, and the Hooghly River.
